Upscale Seafood and Oysters in Costa Mesa

Water Grill on Bristol St in Costa Mesa is a standout seafood restaurant for anyone who wants a polished dinner with a coastal feel. Guests often mention the impressive interior, the spacious layout, and the option for covered outdoor seating, which makes it a comfortable choice for everything from birthday dinners to date nights. The menu gets especially high marks for freshness and careful preparation, with diners calling out oysters, clams, scallops, lobster, swordfish, grilled octopus, and spicy cioppino as favorites. Even the sides, like the mac and cheese and clam chowder, earn plenty of praise.

Service is another big reason people keep returning. Diners appreciate staff who are attentive, knowledgeable, and thoughtful enough to ask whether you’re in a hurry, which is especially helpful before a show or concert. That kind of consideration, along with a solid wine list and a lively yet refined atmosphere, makes Water Grill feel like a reliable choice for special occasions and relaxed evenings alike. In Costa Mesa, it has built a strong reputation as a go-to spot for fresh oysters, elegant seafood plates, and a dining experience that feels a little more elevated without being stiff.

Water Grill in Costa Mesa is an upscale seafood destination, and our recent experience largely lived up to its reputation. The restaurant is certainly on the pricey side, but the quality of the ingredients helps justify the premium. Key highlights are the freshness of the seafood, well-executed dishes, and attentive service.
What stood out most to us was the freshness and quality of the ingredients. The dishes were thoughtfully prepared, with flavors that were refined and well balanced rather than overly complicated. There was a noticeable finesse in the execution, allowing the natural character of the seafood to shine.
The dining experience was polished, from the presentation to the service and ambiance. The restaurant delivers exceptional service and beautifully prepared seafood, although one should expect a lively, sometimes noisy dining room.
Overall, Water Grill is not an inexpensive night out, but if you appreciate high-quality seafood, fresh ingredients, sophisticated preparation, and an upscale atmosphere, it’s a worthwhile destination for a special occasion or memorable dinner.

This place IS THE BOMB! The interior is quite impressive, lots of room to seat people (but fills up fast during weekend dinner times), and covered outside seating is available. Food is excellently prepared and tastes magnificent. Not overly salty and perfect blends in seasoning. I went there to celebrate a birthday and had a great time, a great meal, and a great server. The manager even came by to ask how we were doing...a rarity that I find today in many other restaurants. I had the lobster, my girlfriend had the swordfish, girlfriend's daughter (birthday girl) had the scallops and we shared the mac & cheese. We will definitely return to this restaurant.

We love coming back to Water Grill. Great place to celebrate, a date, or just to enjoy an evening of good seafood and vibe. Valet parking only. We love the grilled octopus, spicy cioppino and Mexican swordfish. The choices of oysters were amazing and great way to taste the varieties. Service was amazing as soon as we got into our table. Good wine selection from various parts but we always aim for Cali wines. Front desk and the wide waiting lobby can be busy.

What an amazing experience! The waiter asked me a question I never expected, but it makes total sense after my friend explained it. The waiter asked if we are on a time-restrain. Apparently, people go eat before their concert/shows/movies, so if you let them know you're on a time-restrain, they will recommend or not recommend certain food.

Everything was super fresh! The oyster, the clams, the scallops. Oh my goodness, everything was so delicious!

We were a party of six, and we shared a dozen of oysters, clams, and scallops. It was just perfect amount since we paired with a bowl of clam chowder and our main entree. We shared the desserts too. Key lime pie and the chocolate espresso cake.

High end & very classy restaurant. Ambience was top notch & staff were very welcoming. Top end food selections & options. Plenty of seating even though it was very busy. Waiting time wasn't bad & under 10 mins to be seated. Good cocktail selections to choose from. Came highly recommended by my hosts & they delivered on expectations.
